Tips for Packing Your Storage Unit

One of the benefits of putting your belongings into storage is that you can hold onto items you will want or need in the future, allowing you to have more free space at home. If you are going to the trouble of paying for storage space, then most likely you care about the condition of the items you are putting into storage. Although Moishe’s storage units are climate-controlled, safe, and clean, there are some additional steps you will want to take to secure your belongings. Here are some tips to ensure your container is packed properly:

  • Create an inventory of everything that you are putting into storage.

  • Purchase a high-quality lock for the door to your unit.

  • Cover mattresses, box-springs, and upholstered furniture with protective plastic sheets or blankets.

  • Protect furniture, frames, and other items with sharp corners by using blankets, bubble wrap, or padded paper.

  • Try to pack everything into boxes because they are easy to stack. When packing boxes, place heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on top. Pack heavy items (such as books) in smaller boxes, and lighter items (such as bedding) in bigger boxes.

  • Pack boxes as densely as possible by filling them to the top with tissue paper or crumpled newspaper to prevent collapsing or shifting.

  • Do not lay mirrors and pictures flat; always prop them up vertically.

  •  Make sure heavy appliances are clean and completely dry before packing. Store them in an area that will avoid the formation of mildew. Pack lightweight items inside the appliances carefully so that they are not hard to find when needed again. Secure any moving parts (doors, etc.) with strong industrial tape, rope or bungee cords.

  • If possible, leave small walkways between the boxes and furniture in your unit to allow for easy access.

  • Under no circumstances should you put perishables, liquids, flammables, or hazardous materials in your unit.
