The Upper East Side, also abbreviated as UES, was developed in the 19th century when the Boston Post Road and the New York Harlem Railroad brought some commercial development to the area. This area became affluent because of where this neighborhood is positioned: by the southwest corner where the Vanderbilt family lived. Mant other rich families called UES home including the Rockefellers and the Roosevelts. Today, UES remains one of the wealthiest parts of Manhattan.
