Things you can do in your NYC apartment to help you sleep better

Getting a good night’s sleep in New York City may be hard, especially if you live on a busy street with lots of noiseThere is, however, a few things you can do to help you get to sleep faster and help you stay asleep.

As you prepare for your day, consider these to help you have a better night’s sleep:

Block noise with tapestries

Tapestries function for art and function because it blocks the noise coming through your walls. Hang a flag or blanket on the wall that’s the loudest.

Use rugs, blankets, and pillows

This is a double-whammy because these are notoriously soft and feel comfy, which helps you feel snuggly when going to sleep. These also absorb outside noise if you’re close to the street or have noisy neighbors.

Stack the books

If you have noisy late-night neighbors, consider putting up a bookshelf with lots of books to block and absorb the noise. The soft pages will soak up sounds coming through the walls.

Use proper lighting

Proper lighting is probably the most important thing that helps you sleep better. Here are things to consider as you prepare for bedtime:

  • Soft lighting. Soft lighting is calming and will help you sleep better. Lamps, rather than fluorescent lighting, is better for sleeping.
  • Use red light. Red lighting does not block melatonin in the brain and can help you go to sleep faster when your head hits the pillow.
  • Avoid blue light. Blue light, like the light emitted from your phone or TV, can block the natural production of melatonin in your body. Avoid technology at night for this reason.

Take a melatonin supplement

Melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland and kicks in at night when it starts to get dark. Irregular sleep, blue light, and caffeine block the production of melatonin.

Melatonin supplements are most effective when used in accordance with other natural ways to produce melatonin, like avoiding blue light, sleeping at regular hours, and avoiding caffeine.

Turn down the temperature

Optimal sleeping temperature is 60-67, so turn down the thermostat to help you fall asleep faster. If you can’t control the temperature, then consider purchasing a fan to blow on your at night.

Use a soft mattress

Sleeping on a soft mattress is one of the first things people think of to help them sleep better. Spending a little extra on a mattress that’s comfy may be well worth the money.

It’s like the saying goes…

“Spend extra money on a mattress and shoes because if you’re not in one, then you’re in the other.”
