What’s the history of Park Slope?
It was first colonized through the 17th century. A lawyer bought land to sell to developers in the 1850s. “Old Stone House,” a landmark for this area, was reconstructed in 1930 because it was destroyed in 1897. Baseball played a prominent role in this area until the baseball park was destroyed by fire. They moved to a larger field in the 1913 season and went on to compete against crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees and the New York Giants.
What is the “Old Stone House”?
This home was important to the Battle of Long Island during the American Revolutionary War. The home is a replica of the original, which was destroyed in 1897. It was used as an artillery position by the British. It was passed on through a family until the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation purchased it in 1923.
What are the demographics?
The area is mainly Italian and Irish, but the black and Latino community increased the population in the 1970s. A few violent crimes happened in the 1960s. After all was said and done, 14 African-American and three Italian-American were arrested.
What’s an interesting fact about Park Slope?
In 1960, the worst mid-air collision happened above this town. One hundred and twenty-eight people died on the planes and six died on the ground, including those in a destroyed church. There was only one survivor after the collision, 11-year-old Stephen Baltz, but he died in the hospital soon after.
