Moving out quickly: 5 things to know and do

So you just got word that you need to move out and you don’t have much time to do it. Many people have to move out fast, so you’re not alone.

Maybe your lease ends earlier than you thought, your roomie’s significant other is moving in, or maybe you realize it’s time to make a change…fast.

Whatever the circumstance, we put together the most essential things you need to as you prepare to move:

1. Gather supplies

Gather the supplies you need to move. Make sure you have the following:

  • Boxes. Having moving boxes is best, but the ones you pick up from the liquor store or restaurant are okay too. Make sure you have more than you think you need and that they are meduim or smaller (you don’t want to hurt your back lifting a heavy box).
  • Tape. Paper tape is the best because it’s easy to tear when you need a piece. Otherwise, regular plastic tape will work too.
  • Markers. Use black permanent markers to label boxes with what’s inside.
  • Packing materials. Paper or newspaper are the best when you’re in a pinch.
  • Trash bags. Use for trash and clothing.
  • Dolly. You can move multiple boxes at once. It’s crucial if you’re by yourself.

2. Ask family or friends for help

Ask friends and family to help you move! They can pack and move things at your discretion.

It’s sometimes easier to give direction and encouragement as they help you move rather than you be distracted and stressed during the process.

Thank them and give them something for their trouble — like dinner or drinks.

3. Don’t think … Pack!

If you’re by yourself and packing alone, then you don’t have lots to think about other than packing.

Open multiple boxes and start packing! Start with decorations and move to the kitchen.

Don’t worry about sorting now, you will sort when you unpack. Now is the time to just get everything in boxes.

4. Having an overnight essentials bag

As you pack boxes, have a bag set aside for overnight essentials:

  • Pair of extra clothes
  • Toiletries with toothbrush/toothpaste, deodorant, and any other hygiene items
  • Beauty products
  • Phone charger

These will serve you in case you can’t assess your things quickly that night or the next day.

5. Give things away

Also, as you pack, have a few boxes that are designated for items to give away.

Now is the best time to sort because you’re going through everything anyway!

You’ll be amazed at how many things you’ll find to give away.
