1. Clean the Mattress Thoroughly
Cleaning a mattress can be accomplished a number of ways, but the easiest way is to vacuum both sides of the mattress. After vacuuming the mattress, use an upholster cleaner (similar to what you’d use on a couch) to preserve the mattress prior to storage. Be sure to let the mattress air out for a few hours before proceeding to the next step.
2. Wrap the Mattress in Plastic
After cleaning the mattress and letting it air out, securely wrap the mattress in a plastic wrap and seal it with packing tape. Plastic mattress covers protect your mattress from air, dust, moisture, bugs, rodents, and dirt. Keep in mind when sealing the plastic wrap, try to make it as tight as possible and cover any holes or tears in the wrap to prevent moisture from entering the wrap.
3. Lay the Mattress Flat in the Storage Unit
It will be tempting to store the mattress upright, on its side to save space in your storage unit. Doing so, however, can damage the coils, springs, and cause the cushion of the mattress to deteriorate. By laying the mattress flat, the mattress will be protected and the coils, springs, and cushion won’t fade over time.
4. Don’t Store Anything on Top of the Mattress
Avoid storing items on top of the mattress! Items stored on top of, especially heavier items, a mattress can also damage your mattress while in storage. To make the best of your storage unit space, place the mattress flat on the top of other objects.
