Have an area that’s “don’t pack.” Pack these items later when you’re ready — usually right before moving day.

Items that shouldn’t be put in boxes yet are chargers, a few dishes, and essential clothing.

Don’t go back looking for items when you can pack them later!

2. Sell!

Download a few apps or post items on Craigslist or Facebook you don’t want to take with you. Or do an old fashioned yardsale. Make a little extra cash on the side AND get rid of stuff in the process.

Clothing, kitchen items, couches, outdoor items, and furniture are all items to consider.

3. Donate

If you cannot sell your items, donate stuff to your Goodwill or other local charity. Someone in need will be thankful you did.

If you’re not able to sell or give away items, simply toss them. It’s amazing how much you can accumulate over time! If it’s big or furniture items, coordinate a pickup.

In New York City, schedule a pickup of large items.

5. Recycle batteries and electronics

It’s best to recycle batteries instead of throwing them away. Not only does it take a long time to decompose, but the contents are also harmful to the environment. Take your electronics and batteries to a recycling place.

6. Disassemble furniture

Start taking apart furniture and setting it aside. The armchair with detachable legs, the coffee table that can come apart, or the glass table that can be disassembled are all things that can come apart before moving.

Make sure you keep the screws and assembly parts!

7. Stop buying groceries a week before the move

If you make a lot of meals at home, you’ll want to stop going to the grocery store a week before. Start eating what you have around. Only throw away a few things when it comes time to move. This makes for some interesting recipes!

8. Pack for an hour at a time

Take it slow in the beginning. Only pack for an hour at a time. It’s not good to wear yourself out before the big moving day. Pace yourself!
